I have a new aspire 8951G and with the same atheros crap card. My connection dropped every 40-60min or so, big downloads or online gaming was impossible. This issue gave me several sleepless nights (this being one of them), especially because my notebook is new. Anyways I was JUST about to surrender and order a new wifi card when I read your post. I just switched the setting in my router and I am positive I will not encounter this problem anymore again. I recently moved and I know in my old flat I had the setting on 145Mbit/s and there I never had the issue. But when I got here I switched to 300mbit and BAM!, disconnect all the time. I'm 99% sure this was the problem, but I will know by tomorrow for sure. Thank you for sharing this :) FINALLY I can rest my head, it was truly making me crazy.
